This year at Premiere DePaul (orientation for incoming students) Financial Fitness is asking students to put on their best Ben Franklin face to show their support. We hope to feature our favorite picture in the Financial Fitness Quarterly! Here are our two favorites from today:

The summer is easily one of the best times to establish your entertainment channels. Since school has been out, I’ve been to the beach half-a-dozen times, to friends’ apartments a few times, and the farmers market once. I’m already looking for new things to do. Since I’m only working part time, those new haunts and activities had better be budget friendly. And when I say budget friendly, I really mean free (or at least free-ish).
While borrowing DePaul internet I found a couple of good websites for exploring the city for next to nothing. This is an interesting site where Chicagoans are encouraged to share their favorite places around the city. Why not check out their suggestions and then do as the locals do? For a touristier approach check out MSN City Guides. You can plan your own city adventure. I love the feature where you can search for events by price category. Obviously I tend to favor the under $20 one.
In the spirit of giving credit where it’s due, a good friend of mine told me about this. Trust me, it’s worth a click even if you don’t consider yourself a hipster.
And by the way, you guys should let me know about your favorite Chicago activities, especially if they’re cheap. Happy hunting!

Today I woke up with a cold-ish-cough-thing. It’s definitely a result of finals week mixed with weather that is just plain inappropriate for June. I think that I might have woken up all of my roommates with the coughing. Also I managed to put on brown sandals with my black pants. Bad move. Especially since I’m hanging out with the best friend today and she tends to call me out on such things. Besides all this, the phone keeps ringing… and it’s not my phone. Honestly I don’t even know who it belongs to. It just appeared here, and now it’s ringing.
But honestly, this is all fine. Because of one thing.
I bought super affordable tickets to NY this morning! Seriously, travel is cheap right now. Especially if you do your research. Try kayak.com, it’s my favorite travel site. Now if I would only hear back about my study abroad application…

NACE research confirms - students who use their campus career centers are better off securing post-graduate employment. NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, in their 2009 Student Survey found that 19.7% of 2009 college graduates who have applied for a job have found one. However, the likelihood of finding a job increases when students make use of their career center. The research indicates that 26% of the students of the Class of 2009 who have applied for a job and have made significant use of their career center have secured a job for after graduation. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
What can DePaul’s Career Center do for you?
-
It’s not too late. Be sure to mark your calendar. The Just in Time Job Fair is scheduled for the day after graduation, Monday, June 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Park Student Center, Room 120. Recruiters from a variety of industries will be seeking qualified job, internship, and post-graduate service volunteer candidates of all majors and experience levels. Also at this event, attend workshops, have your resume reviewed, take part in a practice interview, and visit with graduate programs.
- Schedule a one-on-one appointment with your career advisor to develop a strategy for your job search. Career advisors in your particular field of study will be around all summer long to assist you in applying your major to your future career.
- Prepare yourself for the job search. Schedule a practice interview with an ASK mentor. And tweak your resume by visiting a Peer Career Advisor or stopping by the Resume Drive-Thru on either campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. - no appointment necessary.
And that’s not all. Visit the DePaul Career Center today to develop your personal job search strategy.

Because of this, the summer is a great time to consider your post-graduation future and start planning your career roadmap! Even if you’ve graduated and still need some help securing post-graduate opportunities, all career center services remain available to you for a whole year. However, there are Career Center services that become limited after one year after graduation and some that are available beyond the one year mark.
Not graduating just yet? Let us help you secure an income! Looking for a summer job or internship? On-Campus Student Employment services will be standing by to help connect you to a summer job or temporary position. This could even translate into a year-long position–plan for next year! The University Internship Program and the Co-op Program are also here, ready to help you get an internship or co-op position for the summer, fall or all year long. Think about gaining academic credit in conjunction with an experience-rich internship or co-op position with these great programs.

I realized a few hours ago while sitting with my promo board focusing on student loans, that no one cares much about loan repayment on such a beautiful day as today. Plus no one likes to stop at promo tables anyway.
A friend of mine did stop by however, with an interesting proposition on how to pay off those loans. I do not think I will mention it here, however, it did get me thinking. Summer would be a great time to get creative and be proactive about paying back those loans.
I will certainly be hitting up Craigslist for some potential seasonal money making, working at festivals and city events perhaps. I read an article about how some people like to sell things. Chicago is a good place to sell things I think: popsicles at the beach, water bottles outside of music festivals, umbrellas on Michigan Ave during a thunder storm. I’m not really the entrepreneurial type though. Baby sitting is good though, house/pet sitting would be even better. Lots of people need their kids taken care of during the out of school months.
But anyway, next week in LPC and the following week in the Loop, look out for the Financial Fitness crew with some refreshing summer money advice and a surprise treat. Intrigued now aren’t you?

So it turns out that I am staying in Chicago for the summer. This morning my roommates texted to tell me that the apartment that we looked at on Sunday will soon be ours. Ok fine, theirs. I won’t technically be signing the lease, nor will I technically be paying my fair share. But in my defense, I won’t really have my own room either.
This leads me to the little piece of wisdom that I hope you glean from this posting: Want to save money? Make friends. Friends that let you sleep on their floor, use their meal plan, and borrow their clothes. On this last point it is important to try to find friends that wear the same size as you.
I have also heard of friends who get you desk receptionist jobs, help with calculus, and lend you CDs.
Oh and here’s a good friend that offers all kinds of free financial resources.

Has the financial crisis affected you? As part of a city-wide initiative, called Money Smart Week, to financially educate the citizens of Chicago, DePaul’s Financial Fitness Program hosted “The Financial Crisis and You” workshop on April 21. The workshop covered new ways to attain money for educational funding, reviewed the major causes of the recession, and explained ways to secure money during these times.
Sound intriguing? There is still time to get in on the city’s Money Smart events this weekend. Check out the schedule of opportunities for Money Smart Week Chicago. You can search by date.

It is SENIOR SEASON here at the Career Center. With the current economy, I would have to say that this is one of the worst times to graduate. Speaking as a senior, I understand the reality that I, and so many of my peers, are in.
However, we have our own stimulus plan going on at the Career Center because many of our services and events are being tailored toward the Senior Class. We have the Mobile Career Center initiative starting soon so watch out for tables all over campus, not just outside the Career Center. Additionally, we have started the Senior Season Quick Stop which are daily walk in hours specifically for Seniors who need help job hunting.
The Visual Art and Digital Design Forum is on Tuesday April 21st from 4-6 in the Lincoln Park Student Center Room 120. This is yet another great networking opportunity for students majoring in Animation, Art/Art History, Communication, Digital Cinema, Interactive Media and all of the other majors related to the design field.
Wondering how to get that job you’ve been dreaming of? Nervous about the interview? One of my fellow Peer Career Advisors found this wonderful article provided by the Wall Street Journal. It has tons of advice that I didn’t even know about. Take a look!
As always, the Career Center staff is available to answer any questions you might have. During times like these, it is important to take advantage of as many resources as possible. Although I am going to graduate school in the fall, many of my friends are looking for jobs and are somewhat panicked about the odds that they will find something they will enjoy. All I can do is provide the resources available to me and help my friend or peer become that much more marketable.
Good luck to everyone on the job hunt!
